A New Year’s Message

by Rev. Antonio Reyes, LCP President

The clock is ticking. A few hours from now, we will be leaving 2018 and enter another phase of history – 2019 the year of our Lord (A.D.).

We all are excited; a new year, another year for opportunities, another year, by the grace of God through faith in Christ, to improve ourselves. With 2018 coming to a close, we will try to leave behind memories of 2018 – some will be leaving behind good memories, to others, it might be leaving behind a not so good year.

With all the excitement of the incoming year – 2019, also comes some sense of worry, anxiety perhaps. The coming of a new year also brings with it the unknown.

One might ask, what does 2019 going to be for me – for my family? Will it be a productive year, or will it be another year full of uncertainties or year of missed opportunities and failures?

Some might base their fortunes and blessings for 2019 on astrology, on the Zodiac signs and on Feng Shui. Some on round-formed fruits for fruitful year. They say 2019 is the year of the yellow pig. People who place their trust on these things would definitely be uncertain about their future. How could you base your life on these things?

Since the beginning of time, it has always been God’s time, God’s year – the Year of our Lord. If we base our future, trusting in God’s promises and trusting in Jesus’ Word, we will have a productive, fruitful and stable, contented 2019 – a year full of positive opportunities.

God the Father, through His Son, Jesus, has always delivered for us in the past. There is no way that He will abandon us in 2019, or any other year in the future. Jesus promised to be with us always until the end of the age. He said, I will not forsake you nor leave you. God said, “call me in times of trouble, I will deliver you and you shall glorify me.” And many more promises He gave us.

For us, Christians, there is only one way of entering the New Year and this is by praising and thanking God for the blessings we have had in the past and even for those troubles and problems that we’ve experienced, putting all our trust in Him for 2019. Nothing will ever go wrong if we live a life in accordance to His will and plans for all of us.

Yes, there will come a time when we will encounter problems. But have we not all experienced them before? Look at where we all are now. By God’s grace through faith in Jesus, we have overcome all the obstacles in the past. And that is because God in Christ has always delivered us. “No trials (temptation) have seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful: he will not let you be tried (tempted) beyond what you can bear. But when you are tried (tempted) he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (I Corinthians 10:13)

So worry not of what 2019 might bring for us. Instead, let us all welcome 2019 with confidence trusting in Jesus who was able to give His life on the cross for us for our salvation and eternal life. And let us also help comfort those who are uncertain of their future. Let us remind them of God’s love in and through Christ Jesus and his favor for all of us. We can all have a fruitful year ahead if we do so. May God the Holy Spirit help and guide us to enter 2019 in the year of our Lord, joyfully!
